What is the CRC?
The CRC is being introduced by the government to help the country meet its target for reducing CO2 emissions.
By 2010 it will require NON ENERGY INTENSIVE organizations to reduce CO2 emissions from energy consumption.
These organizations will have to buy Carbon Credits which will cost £12 per Tonne of CO2 based upon estimated emissions for the year.
The organization will then be put into a league table of “emissions reduction performance” and the payments of carbon credits will be recycled back depending on the position in the league table.
Should you be in the CRC?
The CRC is for non-energy intensive organizations whose total electricity spend is more than £500k per
annum. e.g.
- Large retailers i.e supermarkets,
- Hotel chains, fitness and leisure chains
- Local authorities
- Large office based businesses
League table - Early Action
The CRC league table will rank all participants based on certain criteria. One of the criteria for good performance
is Early Action.
The CRC will look at early action initiatives made by the organization to reduce carbon emissions prior to April
2011 and then apply this to their position in the league table. They will then receive ‘bonus points’ depending
on what early action they have taken.
One of the early actions considered by the CRC to be credited for is to install and use an 'Automated Monitoring
and Targeting System' which is how ecoDriver can help. By installing this equipment the CRC will view this as
good performance, therefore positioning the organization higher up the league table which in turn will mean
more bonus points.
